Tapeworm infestation is usually diagnosed when the owner or veterinarian sees what look like small, white grains of rice in the stool, or notices what look like sesame seeds stuck in the hair of the pet. The "grains of rice" are actually pieces of the worm called segments, and the "sesame seeds" are segments that have dried up and become stuck in the hair. Tapeworms are parasites of the small intestine that typically cause few signs of illness in an infected cat. The most common tapeworm in the cat is Dipylidium caninum. Tapeworms increase the risk of colic in horses. They can cause gut ulceration and blockage of the ileo-caecal valve, twisting and even rupture of the gut, unthriftiness and a deteriorating condition that can result in death. Tapeworm segments resemble small pieces of rice. They are one of the few parasites that may be seen in a bowel movement or clinging to the hair near your pet's tail. Pinworms are transmitted from fecal material by oral ingestion. Many times if one horse is affected by pinworms, the whole herd will become infected unless the horses are involved in a deworming program. Pinworms are as common among children today as they were years ago. They're tiny parasitic worms that are thin and small -- about the length of a staple. Pinworms are about the length of a staple and live in the rectum of humans. While an infected person sleeps, female pinworms leave the intestines through the anus and deposit eggs on the surrounding skin. Pinworms are treated quite easily with medication. Sometimes infections clear up on their own, but could take up to 14 weeks ? Pinworms are a common. Itching and irritation of the anal area and buttocks. Pinworms are harmless and are never present very long without causing some anal itching. If you want to be sure your child doesn't have pinworms, wait at least a month. Pinworms are easily treated with an oral medication called Vermox, which is taken as a single dose to kill all of the adult pinworms. A second dose is taken in two weeks to kill any newly hatched pinworms. Pinworms are most active at night, 2 to 3 hours after bedtime. The female worm comes out through the anus, and deposits eggs in the perineal area. Pinworms are also often found within the appendix and have been associated with acute and chronic inflammation.
