Many people are unaware that one major reason why they eat is to provide the body with vitamins and minerals that are needed to maintain optimum health. It seems that, nowadays, people are not too conscious about the quality of food that they put inside their mouths. As a result, many are suffering from diseases and illnesses that can actually be prevented by a couple of changes in their diet.
Aside from protecting your eyes from strain through ways such as not reading small prints in dimly-lighted areas or giving the eyes a break from the computer or television every so often, you also need to build up the tissues and muscles that make up your eyes by adapting a healthy and eye-friendly diet.
Eye and vision problems can actually be abated by your food choices. If you want to have healthy eyes up until you are in your 80s, then you need to know what types of food have the right amounts of vitamins and minerals that are good for your precious eyes. Moreover, eating healthy will not only benefit your eyes, but your other organs and bodily systems as well.
Here are some of the types of food that you need to add to your daily diet:
Fish Oil
Fish oil, particularly those that come from cod, salmon, herrings, and other omega3-rich fishes, are known to aid in protecting your eyes from macular degeneration, which is the main cause of blindness and vision problems. This condition, which is usually found in elderly people, is characterized by atrophy, thinning and even bleeding of the macula, or the central part of the retina. People who suffer from this disease typically have difficulty in reading or seeing small prints and objects, particularly in dimly lit areas or rooms.
Fish oil is rich in Vitamin A that is responsible in taking care of your retinal functions. Adding salmon, tuna, herrings and trout to your diet regularly will help increase your intake of fish oil.
Berries
Berries, particularly the dark ones, are important in maintaining a healthy heart because they assist in strengthening the capillaries, the ones responsible for bringing necessary nutrients to the eyes. Be sure to eat blackberries, bilberries, cranberries and blackcurrants to help take care of your precious orbs.
Fresh Fruits And Vegetables
Fresh fruits, such as apricots and peaches and vegetables, such as pumpkin, carrots and the leafy greens are all important in helping prevent future vision problems. Most fruits and vegetables contain huge amounts of lutein and beta-carotene, which are antioxidants that help fight off free radicals. Every time light passes through your eyes, free radicals, which can hasten the degeneration of your eyes, are created.
If you do not eat enough vegetables and fruits that contain the abovementioned antioxidants, there will not be enough nutrients to cancel out the effects of free radicals in your system, particularly your eyes. People who are getting cataracts and other vision-related problems are getting younger by the minute because many members of the young generation are getting more dependent on fast food and other processed foods as their primary food staple. Most of these processed and fast foods contain little nutrients and more ingredients that can increase the number of free radicals, which damage cells in our system.
Follow Popeye and eat loads of spinach. If you are not a spinach lover, you can always eat broccoli, cabbage, kale, collard greens, bean sprouts, cantaloupe and sweet potatoes instead. All of them contain huge amounts of beta-carotene and lutein.
Once you have taken good care of your eyes, you also need to ensure that the skin and area surrounding your eyes are pampered and cared for. To prevent dark circles, puffy eyes, wrinkles and fine lines, you need to use an eye cream or gel that is made from natural ingredients. Eyederma is one product that can help minimize, if not totally reduce eye bags, raccoon eyes, and wrinkles. Visit www.Eyederma.com for more information.
