When you make the decision to purchase an AED, it is recommended to also complete AED and CPR training. AEDMasters at www.AEDMasters.com allows you to attain CPR and AED training as well as, purchase AED devices and accessories.
In the event that you have not yet completed training you should observe the following basic principles and practices for using an AED device:
- In the event of an emergency, the first step should always be to call 9-1-1.
- Check for circulation. If signs of circulation cannot be found, the heart may not be pumping properly.
- Turn on the AED and adhere to visual or audio commands.
- Remove or open victim’s shirt and wipe chest so that it is free from moisture. Make certain that no one is touching the victim and shave any excessive hair in the areas where the pads will be placed.
- Ensure that the pads are attached/plugged-in to the AED device.
- Attach AED pads as instructed by the AED device or as visually directed on the pads or the AED cartridge; placement may vary depending on the particular machine you are using.
- Follow the AED prompts as they analyze the patient’s heart and determine if a shock is required (some AEDs automatically detect if shock is required, others prompt you to push a button). If the AED indicates that a shock is required, the victim will receive a jolt automatically or you may need to press another button to deliver the shock.
- Allow AED to re-analyze the victim once the shock is complete.
- Do not remove AED until emergency responders arrive.
- Continue to give CPR as directed by the AED device. Some AEDs will guide you through the CPR process.
