Malassezia furfur fungus is found naturally on the skin surface of both healthy people and those with dandruff, it has lately been shown that a scalp specific fungus, Malassezia globosa, is the accountable agent. Hormones may also be concerned, because dandruff usually initiates after puberty and is more commonly seen in males as compared to women. Malassezia feeds on oil that is present in your scalp. For that reason, having extremely oily skin and hair makes you more susceptible to dandruff.

Sometimes sensitivities to some hair related products or hair dyes can cause an inflammation i.e. red, itchy, scaling scalp. Another skin condition that concerns the scalp is called Psoriasis.
