The amount of chlorine in drinking water varies throughout the year.

We have been concerned about chlorine, for many years, but now we have to worry about the drugs found in drinking water, too.

First, let’s look at the problems that chlorine in drinking water causes.

There are many.

Digestive disorders are common.

Allergic reactions are frequent.

The odor and taste are unpleasant.

But, the biggest problem with chlorine in drinking water is the by-products created when the chemical is used for disinfection.

They cause cancer.

Trihalomethanes or THMs are some of the byproducts, but according to Environmental Protection Agency researchers, there are over 600 different chemical compounds that are released when anything is used for disinfection.

We have to disinfect or we would be plagued with outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as cholera.

It’s sort of a catch 22 situation, but on a risk-benefit scale, waterborne illness epidemics can kill 10,000 people in a month in one city.

Estimates vary on the number of cancer cases that occur each year that are caused by THMs, but according to recent reports it looks like the average is about 700 per country.

Chlorine in drinking water is a necessary evil.

But, drugs found in drinking water meant for public use, well that’s a different story.

People take lots of different medications.

The level of drugs found in drinking water varies, but they are higher in heavily populated areas.

The number of different types of medication present is also higher when the population is higher.

You see, when we take an over the counter or prescription drug, only some of it is used by the body.

The rest passes through along with other waste and ends up in the sewage system.

Raw sewage is treated and the water is returned to a river or lake.

The solid waste that is removed is sometimes used as fertilizer.

Both of those practices are responsible for the drugs found in drinking water.

It is possible that scientists and researchers may be able to come up with a way to completely remove these contaminants, but unlikely, since they can’t completely remove pesticides and other trace contaminants.

You are not however doomed to exposure to any of them.

All you have to do is buy a home purifier that can remove the trace chemical contaminants, like chlorine and THMs.

If a system will remove VOCs, it will also remove the drugs found in drinking water.

Chlorine in drinking water is a necessary evil, but you don’t need to drink it.

You don’t need to worry about the drugs found in drinking water headed for you house.

You do need a kitchen counter unit that uses activated carbon and a process called adsorption, along with a block that allows for sub-micron filtration.

And, just to be safe, you need a process called ion exchange to remove traces of lead that have been found flowing through taps around the country.

But, don’t forget the shower, because THMs are gaseous and are a common indoor air pollutant.

Absorption through the skin while showering poses an even greater risk than consumption.

Remember to leave the filter in the on-position when filling a pot for cooking or when washing fruits and vegetables.

Chlorine in drinking water is only one hazard that we face, but it’s a relatively easy one to deal with.
