Do Diets Make Sense?

We are led to believe through television and magazine ads that the diet being advertised is the perfect diet for weight loss.  That the particular diet being showcased is the perfect diet for everyone trying to lose weight.  This is not true and in reality most diets don't make sense when you consider the effect that they will have on our bodies and its weight loss mechanisms.  Here are the top 5 reasons why many diets on the market today do not make sense for the average person:

1.  Simply too expensive.  Many popular diet plans charge a lot of money for people to join them.  Or they offer a low entrance fee into their plan and then hit you with high food bills and ongoing support.  People enter the diet plan and find that it is draining their wallet and ultimately they can't afford it so they drop out.  In the end they have spent alot of money but have not lost any weight.  That doesn't make any sense!

2.  No Goals.  Diet plans that do not establish goals for you do not make any sense.  Many people interested in losing weight have either never tried before or they have tried several diets and have failed to meet their goals.  If they have never tried before they likely don't know any better that goals have to be established.  If they are not how will they know what to accomplish?  If they are a "failed dieter" then they probably didn't have any goals or real expectations to work towards.  Not have a diet plan with goals does not make any sense.

3.  They do not focus on long-term weight loss.  Many diet plans on the market today are designed to help you lose weight quickly but they are not designed for long-term weight loss.  Your body can not sustain itself based on the nutritional requirements that many diet plans suggest.  The grapefruit diet is an example of this.  Any diet that promises you can lose several pounds in less than a week is not the perfect diet for weight loss and should be avoided.

4.  They are too hard to manage.  Dieting should not be so difficult.  It's hard enough to stay motivated and to stick to the plan.  If a diet plans design is so difficult that you feel you need your own personal chef or someone to break down the nutritional content of every meal then you will likely give up on it simply because it is too hard to follow.  This does not make sense to accomplish your weight loss goals.

5.  They are too hard to follow.  Dieticians and nutritionists go to school for years to study this stuff - many earning Master's Degrees.  Let them worry about the nutritional breakdown of the food.  If a diet plan requires you to count the calories, carbs, fat grams and protein molecules then you better be prepared to spend alot of time doing it - because that is what it takes.  Most people will become frustrated and quit because of it.  Does that make sense?

Do diets make sense?  Not the types mentioned above.  Everything you need to accomplish your weight loss goals is available at your local grocery market.  You simply need some guidance as to what to look for.
