Chinese dumpling which consists of minced meat and chopped vegetables wrapped into a piece of dough. Popular meat fillings include ground chicken, ground lamb, shrimp, and even fish. Popular mixings are pork with Chinese cabbage, lamb with spring onion, leeks with eggs, etc. American Chopsuey is a traditional dish for Chinese New Year's Eve. Family members would get together to make dumplings.
Dumplings come in orders of 12 or 30. The larger size is favored by the locals who take the house made dumplings home cook. It was clear that those who came and went and happily chatted are regulars.
This most likely accounts for the presence of a few Indian style dishes on the menu, such as Fried Rice. Ours was fresh and delightful and had less chili and garlic than the more familiar versions. We also had scallion pancake which was perfectly crisp on the outside, chewy with generous scallions on the inside.
A restaurant has downplayed some flavors and omitted some dishes, all to suit Westerners' tastes. But you will find that the rendering of everything, even the beloved spring rolls, is true to tradition.
A vermicelli bowl and a rice platter are brought to the table of waiting diners at the Indo Munch Restaurant in NewYork. A personal favorite and highly recommended, fresh spring rolls are made from a mixture of meat and fish, or vegetarian-style with a variety of vegetables wrapped in rice paper and served with peanut dipping sauce.
