Looking for a good faucet water filter? And would like to cut to chase? That’s great! Let me help you find the best faucet water filters. There are a lot of products out there and shopping can be confusing, to say the least.
If you normally equate high price with high quality, you’ll have to change your attitude, just a little. The most expensive systems on the market include a reverse osmosis step, which is completely unnecessary in the vast majority of cases.
On the other hand, if you’re a consumer that normally looks for the “least” expensive, you won’t get the best quality or the safest thing to drink. Brita and PUR, for example, are the least expensive faucet water filters on the market, but they don’t provide the best contaminant removal.
The Brita filter is a little better than PUR, but neither brand reduces THMs or VOCS. THMs or trihalomethanes are sometimes referred to by scientists as “disinfection byproducts” or DBPs.
Scientists love letters and abbreviations, but they use the terminology to indicate why they are investigating THMs. THMs are not only released as byproducts of chemical disinfection. They are popular refrigerants and industrial solvents.
So, when scientists are investigating the health problems that accompany exposure to THMs in publicly treated water, they call them DBPs. Industrial exposure, as would occur when working with or around the chemicals, is known to cause cancer.
For years, there was scientific debate concerning the risk of exposure from the levels commonly found in tap and bottled waters. Now, the scientific community agrees that exposure to those levels through drinking or showering in unfiltered water increases a person’s risk of colorectal and bladder cancer by about 40%.
So, you should look for faucet water filters that are certified to remove THMs and you may want to consider a filter for your showerhead, as well. A filter that removes THMs will also remove VOCs or volatile organic compounds.
They are common surface and groundwater pollutants, but as yet, are not regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. California and Massachusetts would like to see that change, as soon as possible.
Some VOCs, such as perchlorate, have been found in over 800 test sites around the country. Faucet water filters that remove VOCs protect you from health problems like hypothyroidism and metabolic disorders, while protecting your children from developmental problems. Those are the health risks associated with perchlorate exposure.
You can get a water filter that removes all of the contaminants mentioned in this article, along with traces of lead, parasitic cysts, pesticides, herbicides, prescription drugs and industrial pollutants for a very reasonable price. The best buy for kitchen countertop faucet water filters is currently about $100.
For an effective under the counter system, the best price is about $145. My favorite company offers a combo pack that includes a drinking and showerhead system for about $160.
Buy your faucet water filter direct from the factory and you’ll avoid paying retail mark-up. You can also get better deals on replacement cartridges and free lifetime warranties. What more could you ask for?
