EXERCISE AND THE METABOLISM
Many people and especially women, exercise with the intention of losing weight, believing that their 30 minute routine on a bike or treadmill will help them burn fat, but this is not completely true. Fat doesn’t magically “burn” or evaporate from your body, and fat is not eliminated through sweat.
What exercise does do to help you lose weight is these three things:
1. It burns calories
Many people are overweight because they eat more calories than they burn. When these people begin exercising, their body starts burning more calories than they consume and presto! They start losing weight. This explains why many women that exercise don’t lose any weight: they’re not burning enough calories with their routine. And the reason many women aren’t burning enough calories despite the exercise is because the moment they leave the gym the run home to eat the first thing they can find. In other words, the exercise is only helping them burn of the calories they get from the food they use to “reward” themselves for working out.
2. It speeds up your metabolism
Another reason people might be overweight is due to a slow metabolism that simply isn’t doing its job. A show metabolism causes fatigue and forces you to eat less and less each day as it is not converting the calories and carbs from food into energy.
Doing exercise improves circulation and provides your body with oxygen on a cellular level. Additionally, exercise puts your muscles to work which then revitalizes your metabolism and makes it work. The more effort your muscles have to endure, the harder your metabolism works.
3. It improves your digestion
The human body can accumulate as much as 70 pounds of fecal matter in the digestive tract. Remember that not everything that you eat comes out, and it is possible that you may have between 5 and 15 extra pounds of food that is sitting there.
The intestine is essentially a muscle that weakens when we spend a lot of time sitting down, as would be the case for individuals with desk jobs or who drive long distances to work. By exercising, your digestive tract wakes up and gets stronger. The result of this is more bowel movements and less food accumulated in you intestine walls.
