Feeling Sluggish? How to Increase Your Energy at Work

  • One of the best ways to start your day energized and rejuvenated is to have a good, hearty breakfast. Foods that are rich with nutrients to boost energy levels include whole-grains (think oatmeal or breads), protein (eggs or a breakfast meat, such as ham or sausage), low-fat yogurt, or citrus fruit packed with vitamin C (i.e. oranges or grapefruit).
  • Many of us experience serious light deprivation since we work in offices and cubicles with no windows and harsh artificial light. Take a fifteen minute walk outside – the natural light and fresh air will boost your energy and give you an opportunity to refocus.
  • Arguably one of the easiest ways to increase your energy is to drink lots of water since even slight dehydration (with no apparent symptoms) can slow you down and make you feel lethargic.
  • Having a hard time keeping your eyes open? Take a quick nap during a break – your body only needs 20 minutes to recharge, refresh, and rejuvenate.
  • Get your blood flowing with a little physical activity. Try jogging up and down the steps a few times or doing a few push ups.
  • Plan a vacation. Having something to look forward to will increase your vitality and stamina over the long-haul and motivate you to be more productive.
  • I tend to take all those energy products on the market with a grain of salt – sure, there are those that work and certainly those that don’t. But if you are really struggling with fatigue and trying to make a deadline or have an important meeting, consider taking an energy supplement to give you the boost you need. You can also try an energy drink or coffee.
  • Eat wisely! Lunches loaded with high-fat or carbs can make you sleepy, so have something healthy and energy-packed such as a salad or turkey sandwich (sans the fatty mayo) on wheat bread.
  • Stress can make you feel drained, so create a priority list at work so you aren’t juggling a hundred things at once.
