Is a Home or Online High School right for your child?
A home school high school has many advantages particularly since the instruction can be tailored specifically to your teenager’s needs and interests. Being both a parent and a teacher is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly though. You will want to do everything possible to ensure you are the best teacher you can be. Online high school classes can make your job a lot easier, but can easily distance you from your child and their education.
There’s one quality in particular that makes a person a good teacher. They are truly interested in and enthusiastic about the subjects they teach. This can be both a blessing and a curse. No one is interested in everything and there are no two people who do not have a huge difference of interest in some particular area. Allow high school online courses to provide a foundation for both exploring and studying topics of mutual interest and providing a structured educational experience for subjects you are not passionate about.
It's important that you do not overlook the part about exploring and studying topics of mutual interest. Do not allow an Internet high school to replace you as a focal point of your child's education. Your involvement with his or her education will strengthen the bond between you and will make it easier to address issues and concerns with subjects that you have no passion or aptitude for.
Don't forget the valuable resources you have in your community. There is usually someone you know who is good at a subject and you are not. See if they would be willing to check-in with your child occasionally to assess their progress and encourage them.
There should not be a choice between a home or online high school. Both should be taken advantage of. Don't lose the home schooling focus of your child's education to online high school courses. Likewise, don't restrict your child's education to the home and lose the valuable resources that the community and an online high school curriculum can provide.
