If you want to start cutting calories to lose weight, the first thing you should know isthat there are 3,500 in one pound of body weight. What does this mean? It means that in order to lose one pound of body weight, you will need to cut 3,500 calories.
Obviously, cutting 3,500 calories at once is a lot, so the safest and most effective wayto lose weight by cutting calories is to cut them slowly. If you consume 500 calories per day less than what your body uses for maintenance, you are going to lose approximately one pound of body weight per week. Make sense?
So, if you want to lose weight, you need to start paying attention to how many calories are in the foods that you are eating. This is important because it is very common for people to underestimate the amount of calories they consume each day. When this happens to you, you are likely to gain weight, because in most cases, you are eating more calories than your body uses in a day.
For instance, did you know that two large slices of pizza can easily have 1000 calories? Did you know that 16 oz of ice cream has 600 calories? Did you know that a large cheeseburger, made from 80% lean beef, with all of the "fixings", has about 700 calories?
Using this example, if all you ate was pizza, ice cream, and a hamburger in one day and had nothing else to eat, your calories consumption for that day would be 2300 calories.
If your body only needs 1800 calories a day, you are over what your body burns naturally by 500 calories, which means that at this rate, you would gain approximately 1 pound of body weight each week!
This is why it is important to do things like read labels and pay attention to servingsizes. When you do this, it is much easier to keep track of calories you are eating, and when you know how many calories your body needs, you will know approximately how many calories you need to cut in order to lose weight.
