How To Purify Tap Water Contaminated With Cysts, Lead and Chemicals

If you are wondering how to purify tap water because of new stories concerning possible contamination, there’s a lot that you need to know. While boiling will kill bacteria, only a high quality purifier will remove all of the other contaminants that are known to pollute our water supplies.

I have seen a number of bloggers claim that you can “build-your-own” water purification system. But, they never talk about which contaminants are removed or by how much. Once you see all of the contaminants that are present in publicly treated water, I think you will understand that you simply cannot “do-it-yourself”. You have to buy an effective purifier.

So, what’s flowing out of your tap? Cysts, parasites in an early stage of development, which cause minor illness in the strong, but, are fatal to small children and other at risk individuals. Chemical contaminants, including THMs, benzene, Atrazine, lindane, TCE, alachlor and 2400 other cancer-causing chemicals have been found in publicly treated supplies. The heavy metal lead is leached from the pipelines and flows through our faucets. And, of course, there is always chlorine. Here’s what you do about them.

How to Purify Tap Water Contaminated with Cysts

Submicron filtration, reverse osmosis and boiling are your choices for cyst removal, according to the EPA, who says that they may be present in any supply, at any time. They are resistant to public disinfection methods. Reverse osmosis is expensive and de-mineralizes the water. It is also inefficient at removing lead. Boiling releases chemical contaminants into the indoor atmosphere. Submicron filtration is your best choice.

How to Purify Tap Water Contaminated with Chemicals

You need two steps to remove all of the chemicals mentioned above. You need granular activated carbon to remove chlorine. You need an adsorptive block with multiple filtering media to remove all of the cancer-causing chemicals. If the adsorptive block is designed correctly, it will ensure that all of your water is properly cleaned. Do you think that you could do that yourself? How would you create a submicron filter?

How to Purify Tap Water Contaminated with Lead

This is another step that you cannot possibly build at home. In order to remove lead and other metallic traces, an ion exchange step is necessary. Metallic particles have a specific electrically charge. An ion exchange filter attracts and traps them by relying on their electrical charge. The metals are then “exchanged” for ions of potassium and sodium. This also improves the taste and the healthfulness of your water.

Four Steps

All together it takes four steps to completely clean up our tap-water. Submicron filtration, granular carbon, an absorptive block and ion exchange will ensure that what you and your family are drinking is really good for their health. You can find these in a good home water filter unit.

It may take a little searching to find a purifier that includes all of these steps, but it is worth the effort and they are not that expensive. Briefly, that’s how to purify tap water in your own home.
