Laugh Away the Blues to Control Your Weight

Those suffering from depression can have a really difficult time with their weight. Depression brought on by various causes like loneliness, difficulties at work or stress leads them to overeat because food is seen as a source of comfort, and this over a period of time leads to weight problems.  Because of the extra weight, depression sets in again and this goes on and on in a vicious cycle. We are talking here of milder forms of depression that need a little effort to come out of. The more serious cases would need medical treatment.

People suffering from these milder forms of depression need to snap out of this cycle; otherwise it becomes near impossible to break it. Laughter is a simple solution that can help, but an attempt has to be made.

How can laughter help?

First of all, we need to understand the physiological effect of laughter. It has been proved medically that laughter produces certain chemicals known as "endorphins" which are also called the "feel good" chemicals. They are called so because they actually make you feel good, much like a mild work out does. These chemicals once released into the blood stream, reduce stress levels greatly, making you feel better immediately.

Secondly, laughter stretches the facial and upper trunk muscles, giving you a mild workout. It improves breathing and increases the blood rate, oxygenating the tissues of the body. Laughter clubs operate on this principle for older people who cannot indulge in high impact exercise.

Laughter not only banishes the blues, it is also a mild form of exercise. It is believed that laughter therapy for 10-15 minutes a day can burn about 50 calories. This method thus has a two fold benefit for those suffering from mild depression; it not only banishes their blues, but also exercises their muscles in a mild manner. This can be a good start to the road to recovery.

So the next time you feel depressed for whatever reason, remember to indulge in some laughter therapy. It will lift your mood and energize you for greater activity like exercise and start a positive cycle that will keep you feeling good and fit.
