Deepak Chopra, M.D. and David Simon, M.D. opened The Chopra Center for Wellbeing in 1996 to help people experience physical healing, emotional freedom, and higher states of consciousness.
There are many forms of meditation available to us today, from the long and involved to the short and simple. I propose that you are conducting a sort of simple meditation in your daily life that you may not even be aware of.
Whenever you contemplate deeply on subject matter, any subject matter; that is a type of meditation. Whenever you focus on an object, any object; that is a form of meditation. And whenever you sit silently taking in the beauty of nature or appreciating your surroundings, that is also a form of simple meditation.
Simply put, meditation is a form of focus. Several techniques are available that aid you in focusing your attention within yourself. Withdrawing your mind and senses from the outside world and “going within”, also known as “finding your center”, are essential basics in any type of meditation. In fact, this may be all that is required of you in the more simple meditation techniques, so there is no need to feel intimidated by the process.
Try this:
Find a comfortable spot in your home. It could be on your couch, bed or even outside on your porch. Sit in a way that feels good to you. Now, close your eyes and your mouth and breathe deeply but naturally through your nose. Exhale out of your nose. Do this three to six times or until you notice a calming effect. Now, concentrate your mental energy within yourself. Notice any thoughts that may be streaming into your mind but do not attach to them. Simply allow them to come and go. Choose a scene, perhaps from nature or maybe from a happy time in your life and concentrate on that. Feel positive emotions flooding your consciousness. Stay with that positivity as you continue to breathe. If any types of other thoughts enter your mind other than the scene you’ve purposely put there, simply let them come and go, but do not focus on them. Bring your attention back to your chosen scene. Stay like this for as long as you want to or as long as your schedule allows.
There, you have just completed a simple meditation technique that can lower stress and anxiety levels.
