Techniques for Treating Severe Sunburn

Severe sunburn seems such a steep price to pay for a few hours of outdoor enjoyment on a sunny day with the family. Yet thousands of people who know they should be wearing sun protection will end up with severe sunburn at least once every summer.  If it happens to you or someone you care about, you need to know ahead of time how to treat severe sunburn to minimize the damage to your skin.

For 2nd and 3rd degree burns, you should see a physician.  Severe sunburn can be tricky - leading to scarring, infection and substantial blistering.

Short Term Help and Pain Relief

It goes without saying that the first thing you need to do when you realize that you have severe sunburn is to get out of the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun.  If for some reason you cannot get into the shade immediately, some sort of covering over your skin and your head will help to lessen the extent of the damage.

Drinking plenty of water will help to rehydrate your skin from the inside out. It is something that you should do on a daily basis anyway, whether you are spending the day outdoors or at home.  Cool, clean, moist cotton cloths can also help to take the heat out of severe sunburn and provide some short term relief.

Long Term Treatment

For longer term care, continue to drink water.  A good rule of thumb is to take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half; that number converted to ounces is the amount of fresh water you should drink every day.  On an external basis, you need to help rehydrate your skin as well as to nourish and protect it from infection and bacteria.

Using Vitamin E and Aloe Vera as well as the naturally antibacterial Emu oil will help soothe the painful inflammation and irritation that comes along with severe sunburn. It will also help to decrease the potential for long term damage.  Effective topical sunburn treatments such as Dermal EM, can help take some of "sting" out while renourishing and purifying tissue.

Finally, don't forget to always keep your head covered with a hat and also always protect your skin with a sunscreen lotion whenever you venture outdoors. A sunscreen that contains a high SPF helps to block both UVA and UVB rays from the sun.
