By the time you finish reading this article you are going to have a better understanding of how water quality standards are determined and how the process actaully puts your health at risk.
We all want the water we consume to be 'pure' and free of contaminants. We also don't want to pay thousands of dollars a year for our bottled water supply, particularly when recent research has shown how bottled water can be no better than filtered tap water (we're actually paying for the plastic container, not the water!).
So how can we make sure that the water we're drinking daily is free of contaminants? We can start answering this question by first discussing water quality standards and a simple way to keep contaminants off your drinking water.
How do experts determine drinking water quality standards? One basis for this is the amount of contaminants in our drinking water.
When agencies and government bodies regulate something (in this case, drinking water), they assign a value for maximum and minimum contaminant levels. These values indicate the amount of contaminants present in drinking water and is used as the basis for what can be classified as 'safe to drink' and 'not potable'.
The fact is, you can't really quantify the contaminant level on your own, so you will have to trust expert opinion. But if you're as meticulous as I am, you will realize that we can always take more steps to lessen the amount of this contaminants in our drinking water using a reliable kitchen water filter.
You see, it's up to other people to determine how safe our water is. Of course, we can always think that they're doing their best to make sure no lethal chemical amount reaches our homes, but there is still a risk that the few contaminants present in water may react with the other molecules that could have gotten in the water treatment plants by accident.
Most parents realize this, that's why in the recent years, more and more families have been installing tap water filters in their kitchen or showers.
