Drinking water safety
There just doesn't seem to be any let up in recent times with so much affecting our health these days, from the way we live to what we eat. The latter is something we can exercise a great deal of control over quite easily, but our water source is another matter. We probably take it for granted but we should not underestimate it's importance to us.
We tend to put a lot of trust in the local municipal companies that supply water for our daily needs, and quite rightly so. They must try to adhere to many different, official regulations to ensure water quality for all their consumers. However, I was glancing at a recent survey report which remarked on the list of chemicals found in tap water.
It was not something that had crossed my mind before, and quite an eye opener I can assure you, as the list was alarmingly long. To put some perspective on it there were about 140 unregulated chemicals on it. That means our government agencies, who were set up to protect us against such things, have not set any limits as to how much of each one when found in water, is regarded as safe and at what level are they considered unsafe to human health if ingested. Somebody, somewhere must have some idea but maybe they don't want to stick their necks out.
So, what about the other side of the equation, those chemicals that are actually subject to controls. Apparently the survey mentioned health based limits apply to another 119 chemicals. Yes, that's right, I thought that number was far too many, but apparently not.
Quite worrying when even the so called experts can't tell us the real situation one way or the other, and I for one have switched over to filtered tap water. Well why wait around, time waits for no man, as the saying goes.
