There are really two aspects to slowing down the aging process and staying younger, and it is really important to pay attention to both, because they are essentially linked.

The first (and most visible) aspect is the physical side of staying younger. The health and fitness industry has seen tremendous growth over the past decade, due to an epidemic of overweight and unfit people, brought up in the fast-paced, fast-food lifestyle. Slowing down the aging process is no longer something you do later in life, but people have to take steps to ensure that they stay healthy at a very young age. However, it is never too late to start doing something about your health, and it should be seen as an investment, because it is something that builds up and strengthens as time passes by.

There are lots of avenues to explore, and the way to manage your health and well-being has a lot to do with your personality and interests. The two major areas of focus is eating and exercising. It is better to explore your options, rather than being forced to doing something that you cannot be motivated about.

As far as eating is concerned, there a so many different diets out there to choose from (and books about them), that the simple fact of eating a variety of food, and avoiding too much indulgence food is often forgotten (it is the best and simplest diet to do).

As for exercising, there are also lots of options, but as with the diet, the key is being able to persist in a regime that you can follow. Many people choose to join a gym, but it may not be your type of social or physical activity. It is great to find partners or teams to participate in sports, but maybe you prefer something more individual and less competitive. Perhaps running and cycling is a bit too monotonous for you, and you enjoy the social aspect of sports and exercise. It is easy to recommend lots of things, but you know yourself what you like and enjoy the most.

Good eating and exercise is not (and should not) be a chore, but overcoming the years of bad habits can be difficult to get over. An addiction to bad lifestyle is no more different to an addiction to drugs and alcohol, but the effects are more subtle and less dramatic (at least in the short term).

And so we move onto the second aspect of staying younger - the mental side. Ultimately, it is the inner motivation that drives you to want to live a healthier life, to invest time in your health so you maintain the quality of life even in your later years.

Most people who still look radiant and youthful past their 30s and 40s are not people who have suddenly found some miracle diet or exercise, nor are they people who have lived an austere lifestyle where they are limited in their choices about their diet or exercise. Most likely these will be people that have always enjoyed their work, have a positive outlook on life, maintained positive friendships and relationships with the people around them, and generally lived a fulfilling life.

There is something about living life to the fullest that makes you young, because you are always striving for something, always on the look out for that next challenge, next goal. The human body is an amazing system that responds to how you think and live. Muscles are a classic example of the body responding to the lack of stimuli, but so do our brains and every part of our body.

Once you lose the meaning and purpose in life, the body will accelerate the process of aging, but if you continue to live with purpose, you are telling your body that there is still a long road ahead, and so it keeps things running along to keep you going as well. It shouldn't be about body image, but self-confidence and personal improvement. It shouldn't be about filling some empty mental void, but to enjoy the time each of us has in life.

No amount of cosmetic or physical change can replace the power and strength you get from enjoying life. You don't have to be the fittest person in the gym, and you don't have to be the most successful person in the world. Being happy in your own way (as many mentally or physically disabled people are) is the best way to ensure that you'll live young and healthy.

Former Olympian Yvonne Buschbaum will have sex change
By: muscleguy | 23-11-2007
This is Yvonne Buschbaum, a German track and field athlete who took sixth place in the women's pole vault at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Buschbaum announced this week that she is retiring from track and field and that she will become a man."I feel as if I am a man and have to live my life in the body of a woman," Buschbaum said in a statement on her Web site. (The statement has been translated from German to English.) "I am aware of the fact that transsexuality is a fringe issue, and I do not want to be responsible for it remaining on the fringe." Although gender reassignment will likely involve Buschbaum taking hormones that are on the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of banned substances, Buschbaum says she has not taken any performance-enhancing drugs during her athletic career. Your thoughts? Do you know of any other athletes that have taken the plunge and had a sex change?
