Trouble With Flip Flops

Flip flops are a summer time staple for many people, especially the younger generations. I am willing to bet that it is mostly due to the fact that they have few if any foot problems.  Some experts say that they are ideal for the beach and running short errands, but not for schlepping all over god’s creation.  They can also prevent you from catching athlete’s foot or plantar warts in public restrooms or in gym showers.  However, it is bad to play sports or go hiking in the wilderness in them.  I can certainly vouch for that.

Due to my free spirited personality, my friend and I decided it would be a good idea to go for a short hike down a mountain.  We had flip flops on because it was so hot out and I don’t believe we had sneakers with us – although I could be wrong!  Not too far into our journey we heard loud music playing and the sound of voices, but were unsure where they could be coming from.  We found out from some fellow hikers that those noises were from a German Festival so we decided to follow the crowd there.  Well, to make a long story short, we got lost and the festivities were not as close as we thought.  We did get there eventually and we did have to hike back up the mountain in the flip flops.  Needless to say, our feet were bleeding and hurting us like never before!

It is also not a good idea to go into a crowded place with sandals because someone is bound to step on your freshly done pedicure.  You can also run into some trouble doing yard work - with red ants, bug and snake bites  In addition, it puts you at greater risk for stubbed toes, glass cuts, puncture wounds, or having something heavy fall and smash your foot.  Unsupported feet are a lot more hazardous than supported feet leading to fractures, sprains, and torn ligaments that might require surgery.

Lastly, they can impair a driver’s control if they come off and get under the gas or brake pedal.  In the sun, your feet need sunscreen, also.  Try to alternate between different kinds of shoes as much as possible to avoid any of these problems.
