What is Defibrillation?
Defibrillation is the standard method for treating such life threatening events as cardiac arrhythmias, pulseless ventricular tachycardia, or ventricular fibrillation. The treatment involves sending electrical energy to the heart via a defibrillator. In essence, the defibrillator shocks the heart into returning to a normal rhythm.
How Does an Automatic External Defibrillator Work?
Most of the Automatic External Defibrillators, or AED, can be used by non-medically trained and/or medical professionals in the event of an emergency. The AED automatically diagnoses the patient, determines whether or not the patient needs a shock, and, depending on the model, either employs visual and audio prompts to the user to deliver the appropriate shock or does so automatically, with no user intervention.
AEDs can also be used by persons with no medical training, but are best when utilized by an individual who has taken a basic CPR course that integrates the implementation of AEDs. These portable defibrillators are safe for use in the home, in the workplace, in fitness centers, churches and educational institutions. Almost all AED devices can be used on all persons, including young children. However, one would have to understand the distinctions and the proper steps that need to be taken to shock an adult versus a child. AEDs are available for purchase by any community member, school, or organization at places like www.AEDMasters.com.
Why Use an AED?
Heart disease is the number one killer worldwide, and every 26 seconds, someone experiences a cardiac arrest. When a person experiences a cardiac emergency, his or her survival rate decreases by 10 percent for every minute that the person goes untreated. At www.AEDMasters.com they can equip you with an AED so you have it ready to save another’s life!
