Do you ask why should I see a dentist or why should I see a doctor? I don't think so ! It has become accepted in our society today that we all need these essential services in order to maintain health. Chiropractic came into being late in the 19th century when Daniel David Palmer formulated his theories about the nervous system and the role of the spinal nerves in the body.
Before that time, a lot of people did not understand that restrictions to the spinal nerves cause all sorts of problems to the body and that these get worse if left untreated. From time to time I hear people say that they were introduced to
chiropractic after they had seen many other practitioners that had been unable to help them.
They were so impressed with the results that they decided of their own free will and volition to have a regular chiropractic visit thereafter. They had found out that their body, like a motor car, needs to be fine tuned and sometimes cannot make all the necessary adjustments by itself.
How often do we read in the daily papers that a world class sporting personality has his or her own personal chiropractor who travels the world with them to make sure that their body is performing at its optimal potential. Something positive must be happening as they seem to be winning all of the major prizes and trophies.
The human body is a marvelous machine that has the ability to do minor repairs to itself. These include healing cuts and abrasions, combating infection and adjusting posture. However, when all of these internal adjustments have been made and the
body feels that it is still out of alignment, it send messages of pain and discomfort to the brain so that we know that we had better do something about it before it gets worse.
This is when chiropractors seem to see new patients who know that something is wrong. They have heard that chiropractors do good work and can often help in these cases. After an initial examination which often includes having X rays and neurological and orthopedic tests have been carried out, the patient commences a course of chiropractic treatment. When this has finished the patient is advised to continue with a regular visit to keep the body in tone and in alignment.
Today the chiropractic profession has joined mainstream medicine in being completely accepted. The Doctor of Chiropractic will have studied for 5 years at university to obtain a degree that has included the equivalent hours of medicine or dentistry. In Australia chiropractic treatment is covered by all major health insurance companies, Work Care and Transport Accident. It is also covered by Dept of Veteran Affairs.
