A healthy diet will certainly cut down on your medical costs, but how do you justify the high cost of healthy foods? There are many ways to eat healthy for less. Here are a few tips to get you started.
Look for reduced-price produce
Many grocery stores have a separate section where they keep ripe fruit at a marked down price. If you're planning on eating these items in the next 1-2 days there is nothing wrong with buying these items. You can often find food at a fraction of the price.
Buy frozen
Frozen vegetables are usually cheaper than the produce section foods and can be stored on hand much longer. They are also just as nutritious as fresh vegetables. For added savings, look for coupons and sales before you buy.
Grow your own herbs
Adding fresh herbs to recipes can increase cost significantly. Try growing herbs such as basil, rosemary or cilantro in your own backyard, or even on a windowsill.
Plan ahead
One of the biggest keys to eating healthy on a budget is planning ahead. When you're buying non-perishable items and frozen foods, wait for them to be on sale and stock up. Plan meals around what you have on hand to reduce spoilage.
