How to Grow Grapes
The process of growing grapes has been around for centuries, from the early days of human civilization. A process used all over the planet, growing grapes is a rewarding practice that leads to the even more gratifying procedure of making wine.
First Step : selecting the Right Grape Cultivar
The initial step to growing your grapes is picking the type to plant. While you may pick from the general red or white grapes, you may also need to select from EU grape varieties and Hybrid grape Varieties.
Hybrid grape varieties, on the other hand, have developed to become highly proof against cool weather and common plant illnesses, making them the most popular variety amongst harvesters in places of cold weather and short-lived growing seasons.
Providing your grapevines with enough daylight and a nutrient deficient soil is important to getting a good crop for your winemaking. Enough daylight will ensure you get sweet grapes that are great for fermenting, while a nutrient-poor soil will stress the vine so the fruit is small and appetizing. A smaller fruit equals more skin, the essence of the grapes' color and flavor.
Third Step : Determining Harvest Time
Time will come to crop your grapes, and you have to ensure that they have fully ripened. There you may also find other handy supplies such as bottles, corks, hydrometers and more. Acidity-wise, you'll need to pay special attention to hybrid grape crops, since these often offer fruits with higher amounts of astringency than the ECU grape varieties.
Different sorts of yeast will offer different results in wine taste and personality. A little trial and error might be critical to find the best yeast for your taste. Even though there are no set schedules for wine's ageing process, the rule of thumb is 'the earlier the harvest, the better the wine'.
Following your time and attempts grow a healthy crop and make a great wine, opening the 1st bottle of the crop is as rewarding as the satisfaction of making it just like you love it. Preserve your work during ageing and be patient! When it comes to growing grapes and making wine, a little patience goes a good way. Trust me, when time arrives to savor it, you may taste the difference.
