Female Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence refers to the unintentional, uncontrolled release of urine. Commonly, this leakage occurs during a cough, laugh or sneeze, or when you have the urge to urinate but cannot reach a bathroom in time. It's important to realize that incontinence is not a disease but a symptom. Incontinence is a byproduct of some other problem within the lower urinary tract.

Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control. This condition can happen to anyone, but it is very common in older people and in women. Some symptoms include mild leaking and uncontrollable wetting. These symptoms might be due to problems such as weak bladder muscles, overactive bladder muscles, blockage from an enlarged prostrate, damage to nerves that control the bladder, and diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Urge incontinence is a problem with communication signals between the brain and the bladder. This is where the incorrect signals are sent so either the bladder is full and the brain doesn't realise or the brain says it is time to use the toilet when you don't need to. The symptoms usually take the form of a sudden feeling that you need to urinate, followed by a large release of urine. As well as this you will often find that the need to urinate is triggered by changes of position, the sound of running water and stimulation from sexual intercourse.

Causes of Urinary Incontinence

Significant weight gain and childbirth can stretch the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles control the bladder, and when they're stretched they cannot do their job of closing off the urethra. This condition can be worsened by smoking, being overweight, or during menopause.

It is often temporary, and it almost always causes from an underlying medical condition such as urinary incontinence infection, constipation, vaginal imflammation in women, stroke, neurological injury, arthritis, and side effect from certain medicines. In these condition, it is only temporary and can be cured when these cause of urinary incontinence are treated.

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary release of urine. It may be caused by physiologic, pharmacologic, pathologic, or psychological factors. There are two main types of urinary incontinence: stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Incontinence is most common among the elderly. Older men can become incontinent as the result of prostate surgery. Urinary incontinence can be caused by many different medical problems, including weak pelvic muscles or diabetes.

Urinary incontinence is caused by a weakened sphincter muscle at the bladder often resulting from physical changes such as from pregnancy, childbirth, or menopause. Following are common causes of urinary incontinence like thinning and drying of the skin in the vagina or urethra, especially after menopause and enlarged prostate gland or prostate surgery.

Surgery

If other treatments for urinary incontinence have failed, there are surgical operations that can be performed depending on each particular condition. Pelvic Muscle Exercises or Kegel exercises help to make your pelvic muscles stronger. Kegel exercises have improved or cured urinary incontinence in many people. You can do these exercises any time, while sitting at your desk, in the car, doing the housework, etc. You need to be squeezing the right muscles, if in doubt your doctor can teach you the correct way to do the exercises.
