Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition where a woman suffers from an endocrine disorder, which can also lead to her inablility to conceive. Around 55 percent of females all over the world have polycystic ovarian syndrome. Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome are generally obese, suffer from anovulation, acne, and may exhibit enormous amounts of androgenic or male hormone impact. The severity of the impact on women of polycystic ovarian syndrome varies greatly among women.

The cause of polycystic ovarian syndrome largely remains unknown, although those who are at greater risk in incurring the disease are those who have resistance to insulin, diabetics, and obese women.

Symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

The symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome vary from case to case. As such, it is impossible to develop a general sense of characterizing symptoms of the condition. Nonetheless, the following are some of the common symptoms of the disorder:

a)    There is an irregular menstrual cycle. In most cases, to consider a condition as a case of polycystic ovarian syndrome, a woman has a menstrual cycle that is less than 28 days after the previous period. Another indicator of a woman having the disorder is that there is very little menstrual flow. Another indicator is when there is a total absence of menstrual cycle. In other cases, a woman may have menstrual periods at her younger years then abruptly stops and ceases altogether.
b)    A woman who is infertile may be exhibiting signs of polycystic ovarian syndrome as a result of chronic absence of ovulation.
c)    The thinning or appearance of body hairs is also indicators that a woman may have the condition. When there is thinning of hair on top of the head or hair loss in other parts of the body for no apparent reason, a woman may be suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome. A reverse case may also be true when a woman develops male-like growth of hair in the body especially in the chest and armpit areas. Such growth of body hair is commonly associated with deepening of one’s voice similar to that of a male.
d)    Another indicator that a woman may be suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome is when she suffers from chronic depression.

Who is at Risk from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

Those who are at risk from developing polycystic ovarian syndrome are those who exhibit weight gain, those who have had a history of strokes and cardiovascular diseases, those with type II diabetes or those manifesting resistance to insulin, and those who have a history of miscarriage.

What are the Treatments for Patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

Treatments for polycystic ovarian syndrome depend on the condition of the patient. There is no general treatment that can apply to all types of cases. In general terms, treatment can be classified into four main types of interventions:

a)    Lowering insulin levels especially for those who manifest insulin resistance
b)    Restoring fertility through taking special medications designed to enhance one’s fertility
c)    Treating male-like hair growth or loss of hair
d)    Restoring regular menstruation through therapy
