Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their diet. It is defined as the faulty function of ovaries related to women's menstrual cycle. It effects the women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a resulting of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome happens in one or two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. It is said the symptoms can be so severe that between 10-15% of women have to take time off work, costing businesses millions of dollars a year. In this article, we will discuss how black cohosh effects women with PMS.
I. Definition
Black Cohosh is also known as squawroot by Northern American natives. It is used to treat nervous tension and hormone imbalance that results in depression and anxiety.
II. How black cohosh effects women with PMS
1. Soponin
Besides helping to inhibit the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood and regulate the abnormal cell growth, it's phytochemical agents also help to raise the levels of estrogen. If it is too low and increases levels of estrogen, it results in decreasing the risk of hormone imbalance between levels of estrogen and progesterone before and after ovulation.
2. Estrogen synthesis
Fukinolic acid in the black cohosh is said to help in improve the body's functions in inhibiting the levels of bad estrogen caused by environmental toxins or unhealthy diet that are high in saturated fat and transfat, caffeine, and other stimulants thereby reducing the risk of hormone imbalance for some women with PMS.
3. Resins
Resins contain natural alpha, beta, delta 3 carene, sabinene, and among others which has been used in traditional medicine in liver detoxification thereby increasing the liver's fat and protein metabolism resulting in lessening the nervous tension including emotional and physical stress including depression and anxiety.
4. Caffeine and isoferulic acids
It is said that the chemical agent caffeine and isoferrulic acids help to improve the immune system in fighting against the forming of free radicals and abnormal cell growth, thereby decreasing the risk of reproductive system infection and inflammation.
5. Pre-menstrual pain and cramps
Since back cohosh helps to inhibit the levels of bad cholesterol in the bloodstream, it helps to improve the liver function in regulating the hormones of the prostaglandins family resulting in reducing the risk of premenstrual pain and cramps caused by over-production of certain hormones in the prostaglandins family.
