Pregnancy - Who to tell and when

So, you find out your pregnant. What should you do next? In early pregnancy, you really do not have to do anything different. You do not even have to tell people if you do not want to. (Except the father perhaps).

Too many things can happen and you may want to wait until a bit further along in the pregnancy to inform people that you are indeed pregnant.

Prior to breaking the news of your pregnancy to any other person, you should tell the expectant father that you are pregnant. Even in the best of relationships and under the idea settings, this can take him off guard. Try to remember that if he does not react in the manor that you expect him to. Give him time to adjust to the idea of being a father.

Breaking the news of a new found out pregnancy can be an overwhelming task in some situations. If, for example, you are an executive in a very busy company, you may fear you will be replaced if you take a maternity leave. Believe it or not, they do hire replacements but, only for as long as you are on a maternity leave.

If you happen to be young yourself, one of the biggest non-health related issues you face with your pregnancy may be telling your parents and or the parents of the father. I am not condoning teen pregnancy but,  you need to inform your parents as soon as you know. There are decisions that need to be made that if you wait too long, you limit your options.

One other task many expectant mothers dread or put off is telling older siblings that they are going to have a baby brother or sister. This can be very upsetting news if this is your second child especially. Going to being mom and dad’s only child to having to share your parents with another child can be very difficult for a younger child to understand.

When you are certain that your spouse, parents and relatives, other children, and your boss all are aware of the upcoming birth, you can then proceed to tell your friends. They will usually react with congratulations. Expect some of your friends may respond in a manner other than what you expect. Remember that you are just informing them and you have had time to adjust to the news already.

Pregnancy may also bring up issues with some of your friends so do not always expect people to be happy about your pregnancy. As hard as it is to think about, there are times that pregnancies are not happy news. Share the information with your friends, family, and colleagues. Most of all, enjoy this time. If it is your first child you are expecting, your life is about to change in ways you cannot imagine. Enjoy this time while it lasts.
