Premenstrual Syndrome

Premenstrual syndrome is a common condition in women, affecting up to as much as 80 percent of the female population. However, the majority of women who suffer from the condition report only minor symptoms, which are usually ignored. As such, most of them do not seek treatment for their condition simply because the problem is still something they can cope with.

Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is a collection of various physical, psychological, and emotional symptoms that place a strain on a women. The condition is so named because its onset is related to the arrival of a woman’s menstrual period. In majority of cases, PMS arrives at around two weeks before one’s menses. As a result, the onset is rather predictable. However, despite this predictability, women are hardly able to cope with the intense pain they suffer from.

While there are pain and other forms of strain common during a woman’s menstrual period, PMS is different in the sense that it causes too much impact on a woman’s health to such an extent that the symptoms are of sufficient severity as to cause disruption of one’s normal activities and even the most routine functions can becomes too burdensome.

Symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome

The symptoms of premenstrual syndrome vary from woman to woman. According to one study, there is as many as 200 symptoms of the disorder. However, most woman suffering from the condition only experience a few of the symptoms. The following are the most common symptoms of premenstrual syndrome:


a)    Abdominal bloating and cramps
b)    Tenderness in the breasts or swelling
c)    A recurrent stress or anxiety
d)    Insomnia
e)    Joint and muscle pains
f)    Headache, fatigue, acne, mood swings, and irritability
g)    Changes in a woman’s libido level.

Who is at Risk of Premenstrual Syndrome?

Women with high caffeine intake are at risk of developing premenstrual syndrome. Aside from those who comsume too much caffeine, the following are the other groups who are at risk of developing premenstrual syndrome:

a)    Those who are in their advanced age.
b)    Those who are very prone to stress.
c)    Those with a history of depression.
d)    Those who are smoking.
e)    Those with a family history of the problem.
f)    Those with allergies to nuts and grass.
g)    Those with very low intake of vitamins and minerals like magnesium, manganese, and vitamin E.

What are the Treatments for Premenstrual Syndrome?

One way of treating premenstrual syndrome is to eat little amounts of food. Usually, snack-sized servings are enough for a person within three hours of each meal. Likewise, it is important to include into one’s diet fish oil supplements to keep blood sugar stable. One must also make sure to reduce alcohol consumption.

Therapy is also helpful especially when it comes to providing support or at least reassurance to a woman. This is very vital in conditioning a woman’s mind into thinking that the condition is something that can be overcome with the proper mindset.
