Your Health and Menopause: What to Expect from Your Body During Menopause

Menopause is more than just the cessation of the menses. During this changing period of your life your body is going through many hormonal changes. These changes may also affect your overall health.

After the initial signs of an irregular cycle, women may see changes that are affecting their health in other ways. If you notice any health changes, see your family doctor to decide on a course of action that is best for you.

While hot flashes in themselves aren’t a health concern, if their frequency increases and disturbs your sleep, this could be considered a health issue. Lack of sleep can lead to health problems. There are many options, both natural and prescription that can help with hot flashes and lack of sleep.

During menopause you may notice vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse. This occurs because of changing hormones in your body. Dryness can be treated with OTC topicals and your doctor may want to prescribe a hormone replacement. This is a decision you and your doctor should discuss together.

Mood swings and/or depression are probably the biggest health factor to be aware of during menopause. Depression is a serious health concern that should not be taken lightly. The fluctuation of hormones can lead to depression.

If you notice that you are depressed or sad for more than a few days you should consult a doctor. There are many ways to treat depression, both with medication and using lifestyle changes and therapy.

During menopause many women notice weight gain. There is much debate over whether it is due to metabolism slowing down or menopause. Either way, it is something that needs to be watched. Significant weight gains can lead to diabetes, blood pressure problems, heart disease and more.

If you notice your weight beginning to increase make sure you try to lose it before it gets out of hand. Add some exercise and watch your diet. It is easier to lose a small amount of weight while you are still healthy than it is to need to lose a large amount of weight once health issues occur.

Menopause is a significant event in a woman’s life. Your body is going through changes and your health is an important part of that process as well. Monitoring your health during the beginning stages of menopause is important. Knowing your body and sharing any changes with your doctor can keep you healthy and happy during this cycle of your life.
