The EGL, which stands for the European Gemological Association, has set the standards for diamond appraisals and the reports from this facility are recognized all over the world. The society was first established in 1973 in Antwerp, Belgium and now has facilities in most of the major cities of the world. Buying a diamond that carries an appraisal report of EGL loose diamonds certifies that the value of the stones is equal or more than the price you pay so that you know you have the best value diamonds.
One thing you should know about any appraisal report for diamonds is that this report has nothing to do with non conflict diamonds. The appraisal does not tell you where the diamond originated. There are other ways in which you can determine this information about the stones. You cannot buy loose diamonds directly from the EGL as this institute is not involved in the sale of the stones. Its primary purpose is to evaluate the four C's of the diamonds and to appraise them according to the features of these categories.
For the novice in diamond buying, the four C's of diamonds are carat, cut, clarity and color. The carat refers to the weight of the stone and one carat is equal to 250 mg. This is one of the easiest aspects of diamond appraisal. Appraisals of EGL loose diamonds is a fast and efficient process and is completely impartial. The gemologists who perform the appraisal using precise instruments have no knowledge of the ownership of the stones. When you submit a diamond for appraisal it is assigned a number and this number is used to track its process through the appraisal.
It is only when the appraisal is complete that the name and number are matched in order to send the report to the owner. In this way there can be no possibility that a diamond can be appraised for a higher value due to the gemologists knowing the identity of the owner. The grading process of each of the EGL loose diamonds is the first stage of the appraisal. First of all the gemologists view the stones with the naked eye and compare them to samples they have available for this purpose. After weighing each stone, they then assess the cut, which will reveal any flaws in the diamond due to the cutting process.
In appraising a Marquis cut diamond, the gemologists of EGL loose diamonds and IGI appraisals examine the facets. Such a cut requires 58 facets in the stone. If the proportions of the cut are not exact, then the diamond will not have the proper amount of brilliance. Some of these stones may exhibit a bow-tie effect that causes dark spots to appear in the center of the table, which is the top of the diamond and the largest facet. The Emerald cut diamond should resemble a prism and the finished shape could be a square or a rectangle.
It has rows of elongated facets and even though the total number of facets may vary, there are usually three rows of them on both the crown and the pavilion. While appraisal reports of EGL loose diamonds will not enhance the value of the stones you have in your collection or have set into jewelry, you will know all about the stone and its value. The EGL evaluates only loose diamonds so in order to have a stone appraised that has already been set in a piece of jewelry, it will have to be removed first. If you do not want to have it removed, IGI appraisals are the only ones that will evaluate diamonds already set in jewelry.
