Picture this, you have focused on academic excellence and burnt the midnight oil to pass stringent examination systems. Your parents have always believed you are a star who is meant to shine and this is how you have modeled your path. You have been handpicked for your dream job from amongst the stiffest competition. Focused, charged and a high achiever, that’s you.

‘Where am I?’

And then you pause to take stock of life. You check social networking sites as you see your friends cradling bouncy babies or posing in their bridal finery next to dashing men.

You have felt lonely at times but deliberately kept yourself free and ever available for work. Travel to daunting destinations, chest tightening deadlines and dusk to dawn meetings. What is missing is the gentle nuzzle of a boyfriend, a comforting cuddle from a husband. Men admire you tremendously but don’t approach you. Your idea of a great time is an office do at a nightclub or a company offsite where you end up discussing new deals.

‘What can I do?’ Wrong, wrong, wrong. This is stealing every chance of you finding a soul mate. Somewhere, something’s gotta give. If you consider Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, you have accomplished the basic needs of food, shelter and security. It is only natural for you to hanker for belongingness. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that it strengthens your sense of purpose. A man needs a woman just as a woman needs a man – that’s the eternal truth. Yes, you don’t need the classic model of a breadwinning husband while you are the homemaker. There are dime a dozen men out there who are looking for strong, financially independent women. They need partners, women who share their interests and complement them. You have worked hard and made many sacrifices to reach where you are. There are men out there who want to cherish and support you; you just have to find them. As you meet people, you will realize that not everyone is a ‘complete package’ with a sleek car, a magnificent house, a cushioned bank balance, financial independence, brimming with love and intending to settle down. You have to keep assessing and re-prioritizing factors that will make you happy.

So how would you go about finding the love of your life?

· Play to your skills and plan your life. Introspect as to what kind of life you envisage both immediate term and long term. Know what you want and you will then know where to look and how to achieve it.

· Bolster your femininity. So far you have tried to win in a man’s world by outplaying him. Now you have to fit a different mould. You have to charm him, so woman, turn on all your buttons. Wear flattering colors, use makeup, and update your wardrobe with feminine cuts and heels. Sashay into the hearts of your target audience.

· Don’t be afraid of rejection. If you have lived a certain script so far, people will need time to adjust to your new script. So let them tune in to the new you. Press on girl.

· Work to a loose plan. Don’t let other priorities keep clouding your mind all the time. If you compartmentalize your private life from your work life and set distinct goals for each, you could achieve both sets on autopilot.

· Send the signal out that you are seeking love. The problem is if you don’t, how would busy professionals like yourselves catch your new agenda? Clarity helps in such situations as do extended family and friends.

· Have fun in the process and enjoy your journey. Loosen up and your changed attitude will shine through. It might be a learning curve but if you stay positive and radiant, you will attract a loving companion quite naturally. So shine on, you love magnet!
