The first advertisement was placed in the Saturday Evening Post in 1911 and focused on the undergarments comfort and durability, rather than its visual appeal.

Next, camisoles evolved and even began to showcase lacier silk trends. The brassiere shortly followed. Its developer is relatively controversial but most people credit Mary Phelps Jacob as the founder of what is now a mainstream lingerie item.
