A level coursework are necessary criteria for the students to get good grade. All different kind of A level essays are available in this site. In the coming sections we will advise you some of the very common facts about writing essays.
The essay should be divided into paragraphs. As sentences contain one idea, a paragraph contains one aspect of the subject. The length of the paragraph depends upon the subject but long paragraphs are generally heavy and hard to understand. Even short paragraphs become jerky and distracting.
Unity of the paragraph: the sentence grouped together into a paragraph should relate to one subject. There should be no digression or irrelevant sentences. The most common breaches of unity in a paragraph are 1) an attempt to make the paragraph a miniature chapter 2) introducing irrelevancies and digressions.
Coherence of the paragraph: The sentences expressing related parts of the statement should come close together and follow each other. Sometime the writer breaks the follow by making abrupt statements. This is for the sake of effect. The order of sentence varies; 1) it may be the order of the time 2) the order of cause and effect. Similarly a general proposition may be followed by the illustration and proofs or a number of statements lead up to a conclusion.
Mutual relation of sentences: The subject matter of the sentence should be related in a paragraph. There are various methods of doing so a) with the help of conjunction and connectives b) using the word of reference c) by arranging the word in a manner that they connect themselves d) the juxtaposition of sentences without any formal connectives.
Principal and subordinate: In order that the matter of the paragraph may be seen in true perspective it is necessary that important statements should appear as principal, unimportant as subordinate. This can be done in various ways 1) give more space to important matter 2) important statement should occupy the prominent place- the beginning or the end.
Organization of paragraphs: The essay as whole should be deductive and should be inductive. The sentence containing the theme of paragraph- topic sentence- often comes first or second. The rest of the paragraph is an argumentative support to it. A paragraph in which Dryden explain the refinement in conversation of seventeenth century begins thus-
“Now if they ask me whenever it is that our conversation is so much refined. I must freely and without flattery ascribe it to the Court; in it particularly to the king where example gives a law to it.”
Climax: If a paragraph contain several statement of varying importance of emphasis, it is advisable to arrange them in ascending scale. This helps us to write effectively.
Manual relation of paragraph: In an essay paragraphs should follow the same rule as the sentences in the paragraph. The paragraphs should come in natural and orderly sequence. If necessary they should be linked with connectives, sometimes looking forward and sometimes looking backward.
