Most people think freelance writing is an easy gig. You just write stuff down, and as long as you know proper English, it should be fine, right? Not really.
I am constantly amazed at home many astoundingly bad freelance writers there are out there. Knowing how to speak English is just not enough. Knowing what just "doesn't sound right" isn't enough. A professional writer should have professional training. This means a degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Technical Writing, or another related field of study. So many people think they can get around that by reading a lot, but that is not anything like having real writing training.
If getting a degree is not an option, it is possible to be self taught. This doesn't mean reading a couple of books about writing and then writing some short stories. It means writing every day in as many different ways as possible. It means teaching yourself MLA, AP, APA, NYT, and any style that might possibly come in handy. It means actively honing your skills in practical ways in order to make them the best they can be. I don't know many people who could do this, but it certainly is possible with self discipline and perseverance.
Freelance writing is a strange hybrid of things- it is not an exact science that can be memorized, but it isn't the entirely creative act that many people imagine it is, either. Writing is mixing the two together by studying form and style and then practicing diligently, all the while allowing the creative energy to flow.
