How To Create A Freelance Writer Contract For The Safety Of Yourself Or Your Business

If you are looking to hire a freelance writer, one step you might want to first consider is creating a freelance writer contract. Although we all hope to be able to trust the person we work with, there are dishonest people out there that that take advantage of people. By creating an agreement, you protect yourself, your business, and your rights to the work that has been created.

There are a number of good reasons for you to create a contract before you begin working on your project. Money is at the top of this list. When you enter into an agreement with a writer, you are expecting a certain level quality and commitment in return for the money you pay. By creating an agreement, you can stipulate exactly what you expect to receive for your money. You can also create guidelines detailing how much you will pay for the project upon completion and depending upon whether or not these guidelines were met. With a contract backing you up, you do not have to worry about being sued over unpaid fees if you turn the work down.

A written agreement will also keep you out of trouble down the road if the writer attempts to sue you for copyright infringement. Of course, you will need to stipulate in your contract that you own the copyright after paying for the completed project. If you have done so, you will not need to worry if the writer tries to change his or her mind later.

Aside from the monetary factor, a contract is simply a good way for you to clearly express what you are looking for in a project. In addition, creating an agreement will force you to get a clear idea of what you are looking for in a writer and in your completed project. By having a clear idea, you will be better able to select the right freelance writer and to have a project that moves along smoothly.

Although some specifics will vary when creating a contract, there are several basic pieces of information that should be a part of it. These include:

1) How many words you expect the completed project to contain

2) The format you want the completed project to follow

3) How you want the completed project to be delivered

3) When you expect the completed project to be delivered

4) A disclaimer regarding who owns the rights to the completed work

5) And if it applies, keyword density rules and the words to be used if writing an article for search engine optimization purposes

6) A signature page on which you and the writer both sign and date in order to acknowledge your agreement to the freelance writer contract

7) Your rights in regard to asking for the finished product to be rewritten or how many opportunities the writer has for a rewrite before the contract is broken

Generally speaking, you and the freelance writer that you choose may most likely live miles apart. In this case, make sure the writer sends the signed freelance writer contract to you by fax or by scanning and sending as an email attachment before work begins.

If you find a writer through a freelancing site, it may not be absolutely necessary to create a freelance writer contract because many of these legalities may be covered through the site. Even so, it is a good idea to create a freelance writer contract in order to further guarantee your safety.
