At least one article per day ... Don't go overboard with mentioning you keywords -- 3 or 5 times is enough. Any more than that and the editor's usually reject the article. Always write your articles to an intended audience of humans. 
If the article directory lets you, use an image or two in the body of the article. Ideally, one image at the top of the article, acting as a header. Don't underestimate the power that a properly placed image provides.
 
Use your own style, your own words, and people will respond to that. An effective article is one that causes people to want to click one your links. It doesn't try to trick them or shower them with links. Be as subtle in your writing as possible -- no one likes the hard sell, so don't write your article like it's a product pitch.
