The process consists of three basic, yet crucial points to maintaining that top spot. The first is, obviously, to monitor your rankings. You can do this one of three ways; either you can manually check your sites rank, utilize a software which automatically checks your rank for you, or you may want to use the available online services to do so.

As Richard Vanderhurst explains, time consumption is one of the main factors when choosing a method. Manually checking and online services can often be far lengthier than the simple use of software. But, this provides another problem. Rank-checking software may abuse the search engine’s system rules on how it is meant to run by conducting a number searches at one time. Links are another factor that must be monitored. When your site was completed, you had links that beat out your competitors. But who’s to say that theirs haven’t been growing since then, slowing creeping over you toward that top rank? The last thing to be aware of when monitoring is the changes in the search engine environment. People are constantly posting on blogs and in forums, adding newsletters and upgrading content.
