Writing Peeves

I am a ghostwriter. I love to pour myself into novels and memoirs of nearly every stripe. I have written and edited a huge variety of work. But there are two things this writer does not like to do. The first one is to write blogs and website articles for wealthy companies that can afford to pay top dollar for their advertising, and only get paid pennies for my time. I am certain that any writer out there who is working to earn a living at his craft can understand what I am saying here.

The second thing I do not like to do is to write papers for students. I understand there are a number of mills out there that specialize in that sort of work. There was a time when I was desperate enough to apply to write for some of those mills. But I very quickly came to the conclusion that the work they offer was not for me. I have not attended the class in question, and it should not be up to me to try to second guess what the instructor is looking for. That is the student’s job. I will happily edit what a student has already written. I will even sit down with him to help him organize his ideas. But I draw the line at writing the paper for him.

Still, every so often, a student finds one of my ads, and calls up to ask if I can help out with an assignment. Generally, it is a foreign student whose first language is obviously not English, and my heart immediately goes out to him or her, as the case may be. I know what it is like to have to struggle with a language that is not really second nature, and I know for a fact that I would need to be speaking, reading and writing in a given language for a good ten years before I would begin to feel confident in my ability to express myself creatively in that language. I am a strong believer in bilingual education, but I realize that on the college level this is nearly impossible.

So, as I say, my heart goes out to these students. Some have called me in tears, Can you please help? I am overwhelmed. And the mother in me takes over before my business sense wakes up. Of course I can help. What is the problem? Perhaps we could do it this way?

And of course, nearly every time, I find out too late that the student has put very little work into the assignment, and I am left, once again, to try to second guess whatever it is the instructor is looking for.
