Bikram Yoga or Hot Yoga



Bikram yoga is a type of yoga, which includes a series of 26 poses performed in a hot room. Bikram yoga is also known as “Hot yoga.” It was created by Bikram Choudhury. Born in Calcutta in 1946, Bikram began Yoga at the age of four with Bishnu Ghosh, the younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda.

Bikram Chuodhury developed his own version of Hatha yoga, which includes a tightly scripted sequence of 26 positions and two breathing exercises. Bikram yoga is generally practiced in a room at a temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit or even higher. For this reason it is also known as hot yoga.

The idea behind this is that the heat will help in loosening of muscles, improving flexibility, and increasing your heart rate. Moreover, the heat also makes you sweat a lot. Bikram yoga has roots in Hatha yoga which was devised to heal the mind and the body.

Benefits of Bikram Yoga

The following are the benefits of practicing Bikram yoga:

26 Bikram Yoga Postures

26 hatha yoga postures of Bikram yoga are, like most other hatha yoga styles, which are designed to stretch your muscles, compress your cardiopulmonary system, and enhance your circulation.

Initially, this practice can be uncomfortable or mildly painful and you may get dizzy or nauseous during the session. All these are the symptoms of detoxification taking place in the body, but you should be cautious as it may result in dehydration.

In general, in the first one hour of a practice session is spent on doing standing exercises, which is followed by half an hour of floor exercises. This yoga routine comprises of Bikram yoga positions such as:

* “Half Moon Pose,” which helps in strengthening of your abdominals and also in relieving back pain

* The Awkward pose, which helps in strengthening of calves, thighs, and hips

* Wind Removing Pose, which helps in strengthening of spine and increases flexibility

The last mentioned one also exerts pressure on your colon, which perhaps is the origin of the name of the position.

Reasons for Maintaining 105 Degrees Temperature

It is important to maintain such a temperature while practicing Bikram yoga postures because:

* Temperature keeps the body from overheating

* To protect the muscles allowing for deeper stretching

* In order that toxins are encourage to be ‘sweated out’ through open pores

* For thinning the blood and encourage much better circulation

* This gives a better cardiovascular workout

* This enhances muscle strength

* Fats in the body seem to be made more fluid and more easily cleared from the body
